Dogfooding: Camtasia from TechSmith

In this episode of Dogfooding, I talk about Camtasia from TechSmith, a program for creating video tutorials and presentations directly via screencast. I have been using Camtasia for MAC and Windows for a long time. I show some things that been driving me crazy lately which leads to taking longer to edit videos.

With that said, Camtasia has a lot of great features too. I actually use it to add finishing touches to videos (adding text and graphics) because it’s easier than using Premiere Pro from Adobe!

At the end of the video, I share my #1 tip when creating a great user experience. I also talk about the features that most apps should have.

Here are other bugs or features I wished Camtasia had.

  1. In a recent update to Camtasia, they added a lot of new transitions. So many I feel they should have a search box to make it easier to find the one I want.
  2. Camtasia nees more audio and visual effects along with making the remove color feature better.
  3. Please, please add a feature to not have the quiz and marker + symbols show up when editing. They should be in the Edit or Modify menus!
  4. Please, please remember how I setup effects so the next time I add an effect, they same settings are used by default. We all have a “style” and it might not be the same as the default style that is set in Camtasia.
  5. Why isn’t there a button to go to the beginning or the end of the entire track???

  1. These suggestions may or may not help you. Hopefully they do. I believe you said you were using version 2019 so you may need to update to get some of this functionality. You can always download a free trial to see if it helps with your issues.
If you select a range and ripple delete, it will delete that range for all track so things stay in sync (say callouts on another track that is not currently visible.
For the quiz (or marker) issue, if you click the little arrow above where it says Quiz at the top of the tracks at the right end of the time display, the quiz (or marker) sections will be hidden and you won’t have to deal with accidentally adding quizzes (or markers).
If you have a newer version of Camtasia, you can save presets of your settings for an effect by pressing the + button in the effect property panel. You can then also favorite your presets and only those will show on your favorites tab for easy uncluttered access.
You can change the selection after a split in the application preferences under the timeline options. You can choose to select the none, left, right or both clips after the split is performed.
Pressing Command+Enter jumps to the start of the timeline.
Pressing Command+Shift+Enter jumps to the end of the timeline.

Note that you can apply effects to multiple media at once. Just select the clips you want to be affected, then click click on the effect and choose add to selected media.
You can also select all clips on a track at once by double-clicking an empty space on the track header.

Hopefully these tips will make your experience a bit easier than it has previously been. Keep the pain points coming. It can only help to make the product better by knowing where users get frustrated or spend a lot of time.
