In April 2019, during my visit to India to speak at the C# Corner Conference, I had the privilege of visiting the Voice of Slum NGO in Delhi along with two other speakers. There, we met the inspirational founders Chandni Khan and Dev Pratap Singh, who shared the touching story of how this organization came to be. Both hailing from the slums themselves, they are driven by a genuine desire to give back and uplift other children from similar backgrounds. Their narratives about the children they’ve supported were deeply moving, showcasing the transformative impact of their work over the past years.
Recognizing the crucial need for sustained support, especially in resuming vital vocational training programs like sewing classes for women, the founders stressed the necessity for financial assistance. Chandni shared that upon completion, these women could earn approximately 15,000 rupees ($215) per month. When I inquired about restarting the program, she mentioned the necessity of a teacher and a modest monthly budget of around $150.
Moved by their dedication and the impact of their work, upon returning from my initial visit, I decided to allocate all profits from one of my books to be donated to the organization.
During my 2022 visit to the NGO, I also had the opportunity to contribute by providing five computers for the children. Dev expressed his gratitude, emphasizing how this resource would enable the children, many of whom had never encountered a computer before, to gain essential skills for their future.
Voice of Slum offers various avenues for support, including purchasing school supplies or sponsoring a child for $30 a month. For more information on how to contribute, please visit their website: https://www.voiceofslum.org/
